The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan was completed in 1361 and named after the leader al Nasir Hassan who ruled from 1347 to 1361. His tomb and the Islamic school (madrassa) took four years to build and were of a scale unseen at the time covering 7,900m². The building was paid for by the estates of victims of the bubonic plague which hit Cairo in 1348. The entrance to the complex is through a tall portal which leads you to a low-ceilinged passageway and into a courtyard.
